Just for Fun: Old Irish Dance Footage

3 October 2011 2 Comments by Shelly Hathaway

I like to post videos now and then of amazing Irish dancers. We all love to watch Riverdance clips, world champions competing, or stunning group numbers. But usually the videos I post are quite modern. They’re recorded no earlier than the 90′s, and most were made in the past couple years.

Then I thought, what about old videos? We’ve seen lots of modern Irish dancing, but I thought it would be fun to dig up some old footage; pre-Riverdance stuff from the 70′s or earlier. I discovered there’s a LOT out there. Here are a few of the best clips I found. Enjoy!

CLIP 1: I’ve never seen two guys dancing together before!

CLIP 2: A solo dancer on a very bouncy stage.

CLIP 3: I’ve never done Ceili dancing quite like this. This is also the only clip I found that includes female dancers.

That last video – the ceili dance, we call Set dancing at home. I learnt it while growing up and I've recently found an older lady teaching it in my area, so I'll be heading to those classes too. The shuffle steps are local to a region. There are some excellent videos on youtube.
