Carrauntoohil, the central peak of Co Kerry’s Macgillycuddy’s Reeks, is the highest point in Ireland. Follow the Hag’s Glen up the dizzying Devil’s Ladder (ok, there are some other steps in the climb but I had to mention those names) and you’ll reach the summit where you’ll find a spectacular view and a 16 ft/5 meter metal cross.

Fox sightings are becoming a regular occurrence in Dublin City Center. Attracted to the city by the plentiful food available (like people actually leaving food out for the animals), foxes have even been spotted sneaking around Dublin Castle. Source

The Burren is Ireland’s favourite heritage site according to a study completed for Heritage Week 2010. Interestingly, the study also found that the Irish are mostly curious about earlier medieval and Christian sites versus sites from later periods.  To find out more, click here.

The Auld Lammas Fair in Ballycastle, Co Antrim took place on Monday and Tuesday of this week. The traditional market fair has taken place on the last Monday and Tuesday of August since the 17th century and boasts market stalls, street entertainment, horse trading, and local treats like dried seaweed and a confectionery called Yellowman.

The Electric Picnic is an extremely popular annual arts and musical festival held each September in Stradbally Hall, Stradbally, Co Laois featuring an eclectic range of acts. This year the picnic will host the 55 strong RTÉ Concert Orchestra who will be presenting a special entitled “Electric Proms”. Sounds like it could be a highlight of the weekend!

There is a oratory located in Venice dedicated to the Irish Saint St. Gall. The tiny oratory is located near the famous Piazza San Marco and currently houses an exhibition dedicated to the Irish architecture firm de Blacam and Meagher. To read more about this, click here.

The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship will take place this Sunday with current champions and all time record holders Kilkenny (they’ve won 32 times!) and Tipperary competing for the winning prize, the Liam McCarthy Cup. Who are you rooting for? Go on the premier!
