Dervish Celebrate New Album With Online Session
Trad supergroup ‘Dervish’ will soon be celebrating the launch of their new album ‘From Stage To Stage’ with a session to be broadcasted live around the world. On May 21st at 9:30pm GMT, Dervish will gather with their friends at Hargadons Pub in Sligo for a night of music and will be taking requests and listening to comments from Internet viewers.
The Sligo based six piece, who celebrate 21 years in the music industry this year, launch their new live album which features live tracks from Sebastopol festival in California and at the Sligo Live festival in Ireland. ‘From Stage To Stage’ includes guest appearances by Duke Special, Ron Sexsmith, Vasen, Martin Hayes and Denis Cahill and bluegrass mandolin virtuoso Mike Marshall. This Live Album contains material from Dervish’s extensive back catalogue and features a new song “Gold in them Hills”, written by and featuring Ron Sexsmith.
Dervish remain one of Ireland’s most sought after festival acts internationally and this year they have taken their 21st Anniversary celebrations to festivals around the world including return trips to high profile events such as Celtic Connections and the legendary Cambridge Folk festival. Hence the demand for the band is so high that due to overlapping schedules they unfortunately had to turn down an offer to perform at the 40th anniversary of the Glastonbury festival due to a prior engagement at a festival in France.
Co-founder and accordion player Shane Mitchell says ‘it’s amazing, here we are 21 years later still doing what we love and the offers to perform all over the world are still coming in. We feel privileged to be playing our native music alongside other world music acts.
Dervish, whose members include Cathy Jordan, Liam Kelly, Shane Mitchell, Brian McDonagh, Tom Morrow and Michael Holmes, have performed in every corner of the globe, whether before heads of state or to an audience of 240,000 people in Rio de Janeiro at the World’s biggest Festival, Rock In Rio. They have shared the stage with world stars and have chronicled their musical journey in 10 CDs and 2 DVDs. Over the years they have received many awards, but their proudest moment has to be when Sligo City Council bestowed upon them the Freedom of the City of Sligo for their contribution to the region’s fibrand artistic culture.
