Adult Irish Dancers Like to Play Dress-up Too

2 December 2009 15 Comments by Christy Dorrity

Stepping into a costume transforms you out of the ordinary and into a magical place. Who doesn’t love to step into a garment that changes the way they look and feel about themselves?

We asked adult Irish dancers from around the globe to share the dresses they don for competition and performance. What follows is a line-up of dresses that invite confidence and inspire brilliance in their wearers. Have a look and tell us: what do you love most about your own dress or costume?

Browse the images below and click on anyone of them to open the gallery.

You can try our fancy PicLens Viewer too if you like (wait a few seconds after clicking for it to load)!

Dressing up does make you feel different. Your performance will be different and your whole attitude changes, there is no doubt about it. I think picture #3 looks the most like what I think of when I think of Irish dancers and heritage. They are all pretty cool in their own way though.

You have to wear the costume to get into character if you are going to dance like that. If you didn't and you just went out on the street and danced they would think you had a marble lose in your head.

I do think the costumes add a lot to the performance. Not many would pay to go to a show if they were all wearing blue jeans and sweat shirts.

Pic Lens doesn't work for me, maybe it's just me? Getting into costume is as much a mental exercise as anything else.

This brings back great memories. In one of my film classes in college we did a short short about an Irish dance troupe. It was kind of like a "Spinal Tap" spoof, but we got a lot of local dance troupes to come in, dress up, and do there thing. We had a lot of fun with it just let me tell you, these people know how to dance!! Thanks for putting as smile on my face this morning.

Did anyone see that brilliant programme about Irish Dancing at the World's competition on BBC2 last week? It seems like an addiction with the top dancers! Even a child's costume costs thousands of pounds. Amazing
