Great Art On Display In Merrion Square And The RDS

A nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Dublin is to stroll around Merrion Square. Not only do the area’s park and the Georgian architecture provide pleasant surroundings but also on display along the square’s surrounding iron fence is the work of some 200 artists as part of the Merrion Square Art Gallery. A wide variety of work is shown for public viewing and purchase (my favourite: the ballet dancers and musicians portrayed dynamically in brown and red colored paint) from 10 am to 6:30 PM free of charge (unless you want to take something home with you of course). On a sunny weekend in the city, there’s not much nicer than this.
If an afternoon like this is your cup of tea then you might be interested in the RDS Art Fair 09 which will take place this weekend in Dublin. (This event is a one time deal whereas the art at Merrion Square is displayed year-round.) Over 100 artists and galleries will be exhibiting work in the RDS Main Hall for a ticket price of just 10 Euro. There will also be a series of free art themed lectures open to all including topics like whether the arts are indispensable to national recovery in Ireland (see more about this here). There’s also a special exhibition called ‘Art on the Balcony’ presenting up and coming Irish artists.
What a great weekend in Dublin for art lovers! For further information on the Merrion Square Art Gallery, click here and you’ll find all you need to know about the RDS Art Fair here. One last link: If you’re looking to find out more about the current state of the arts in Ireland and the importance of the RDS Art Fair, click here for a great item in The Irish Times.
