Ramble Your Way About Ballyhoura

This morning as I was perusing the good old net for something to strike a chord with me to write about, I kept coming across information about an upcoming rambling weekend in Ballyhoura. Nothing really registered in my mind as to what one does on a rambling weekend. The first thing I thought is that maybe it’s a weekend for people who talk too much. Badum-ching! Of course, that’s not quite what this particular event is all about. The weekend is for the walking-aimlessly-on-trails type of rambling, an activity that has become quite popular in Ireland in recent times.

The Ballyhoura Autumn Rambling Weekend will take place from the Deebert House Hotel, Kilmallock, Co. Limerick from October 16th to the 18th. Hosted by the O’Sullivan family, all levels of ramblers are welcome to participate in a variety of walks in the Ballyhoura region. Incidentally, I had never heard of the Ballyhoura region before now. I thought it was the name of a town but I found out that it’s a beautiful rural area where Limerick, Tipperary and Cork meet.

Let’s get back to the actual rambling. There are a bunch of different walks planned throughout the weekend including an historic walk through Kilmallock, a six hour ramble (I have no idea if I am using ramble correctly here) through the Ballyhoura forest, and even a night walk. There’s also Oiche Ceol agus Craic [night of music and fun] planned for the weekend which you can’t go wrong with. [Click here for the full weekend schedule.]

All in all, I think this rambling weekend business sounds like a lot of fun. If I weren’t on my way to America tomorrow, I’d even be tempted to head down there to check it out. Would you?

I found this short clip on the Ballyhoura Tourism website. It should give you all an idea of what the region is all about.
