Irish Unite With Planet For Climate Change
This December, Copenhagen will host international policymakers for important climate talks to create a new global treaty on cutting carbon emissions. In response to this, a worldwide campaign called 350.org has been created to unite people and stimulate solutions to the climate crisis.
The focus of the campaign is on the number 350 as scientists have determined this upper limit as the safe level of CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere. On October the 24th, climate change activists from China to Ireland participated in demonstrations in what was described as the “most widespread political event in the planet’s history” by 350.org’s co founder Bill McKibben.
I was happy to discover that Ireland hosted events all over the country as part of the 350.org campaign. The majority (and larger) of events occurred in Dublin, like 350 In The Park where hundreds of people stood in place of the numbers 350 cut out into the grass of a local park*. (Events like this one and the others around the world can be viewed on Flickr. I had a lot of fun looking through all the different demonstrations, so I’d recommend taking a second to check them out.) This event was followed by parties and film screenings in the city. There were also smaller events in the more rural parts of Ireland where, for example, people turned out their lights and lit candles in their windows to show support of the 350 campaign. It really is great to see people making an effort no matter the size of gesture.
*Interestingly, this park was chosen as it has been designated to become a car park sometime in the near future.
