Ireland: Did You Know?
♣ Every year, people compete in a swim race along the River Liffey in Dublin. A little under 300 men and women competed this year on September 13th. The race is one of Ireland’s most famous traditional sporting events and it is the final swim in a series of 26 open water races. Source
♣ Since 1978, Cork City has hosted a jazz festival in late October that attracts hundreds of musicians and thousands of music fans. The four day festival will include over 120 acts this year and will take place from October 23rd. Click here for this year’s programme.
♣ In 1957 Ireland joined the United Nations and then joined the European Economic Community (EU) in 1973. By joining these organizations, Ireland began the process of modernizing its economy.
♣ If you’re looking for good food in Ireland, your best bet is to travel outside of Dublin. The Good Food Ireland awards recently presented top prizes to restaurants everywhere but the nation’s capital. And not surprisingly, the Michelin guide also just listed 17 Irish pubs in its 2010 Michelin Eating Out in Pubs Guide without the inclusion of a single Dublin pub. Source; Source
♣ There are 150 newspapers in Ireland. Source
♣ The Dublin Zoo has been around for 178 years. In its past elephant rides, chimpanzee tea parties and ice skating on the lake all took place at the zoo. To read more about the zoo’s interesting history, click here.
♣ Between 1995 and 2007, hundreds of thousands of people immigrated to Ireland because of the booming economy. Nowadays, the number of people leaving the country outnumbers the people moving to the country. To read more, click here.
