Belfast Time Capsule To Be Opened In 2112

Belfast City Hall is located in the city center’s Donegall Square in a beautiful Edwardian Baroque style building. The building, which has been closed for an £11 million refurbishment since 2007, reopened this week with great fanfare. All sorts of events, like film screenings, fashion shows, music performances, multi-cultural dance shows, and art exhibitions, will take place from the 17th to 31st of October to celebrate the reopening of the iconic building.

One of the really fun things that is also being done to honor the restoration is the burial of time capsule. The time capsule will be revealed in 2112 and is full of 2009 related items chosen by the public. I don’t know about you but I was really curious to find out what was placed inside the capsule. (I’m apparently kind of into time capsules. I even just asked my sister if she would bury one in our backyard today.)

Here’s what is included in Belfast’s time capsule: An ipod or mobile (to show the level of technology now), photos of Belfast 2009 including the city hall, shops and the clothing, artwork from local students, miniatures of Harland and Wolff cranes (this is the company that built the Titanic), a Lonely Planet travel book for city, timetables and pictures of Belfast’s public transport, movie listings, and documentation explaining how the peace process was achieved between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

I’m sure this capsule will be really interesting to future generations.  I know I’d love to see the contents of a capsule from 100 years ago.  Now, what will I bury in my backyard …
