An Irish Peat Fire For Your TV
When it’s rainy and cold outside, which I can confirm is often the case in Ireland, there is nothing nicer than sitting next to a warm and cozy peat fire. Before I moved to Ireland, I wasn’t aware that peat from bogs is cut, dried and then used for fuel there. Once I moved into an old terraced house near the Guinness Brewery with a real fireplace, I quickly became accustomed to buying a bail of briquettes (the molded blocks of peat) on my way home from work to light the minute I arrived home. (By the way, the image isn’t from my sitting room – it’s from a pub!) Anyway, the smell and heat really are fantastic.
Dermot Ryan, a Galway man, is attempting to capitalize on people’s love of peat fires, particularly Americans. I think we’ve all seen the DVD or TV channel that shows a blazing fire in people’s sitting rooms, particularly over the winter holidays, to give the room a pleasant feeling in the absence of a real, roaring fire. Ryan created a peat fire version of the classic log fire which is now available on DVD and sells with peat smelling incense. The DVD, which shows a fire of hand cut peat from Galway, was filmed in a 15th century Irish castle and lasts for an hour and twenty five minutes. It’s available to purchase for $27.99 on Creative Irish Gifts.
Personally, I prefer missing an actual peat fire to watching a DVD but I’m sure some people out there may enjoy this product. Would you?
