The Belfast Zoo is looking for a woman who was dubbed the ‘elephant-angel’ in the 1940s. Apparently, during WWII, a Belfast resident housed Sheila, a baby elephant, in the backyard of her home because of zoo’s fears of a hit from bombers. Ireland is taking part in this year’s Earth Hour. Earth Hour raises awareness on climate change by asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and appliances for one hour on the last Saturday of March. Many locations throughout Ireland including banks, Dublin’s Custom House, Government Buildings and Leinster House will join 1,000 worldwide locations in an hour of darkness. And don’t forget that private residences are encouraged to turn off their lights too! The Minister for the Environment John Gormley and his family will be turning out the lights in his Dublin home. Will you? To read more, click here. Source; Image Source

Researchers in Pennsylvania have discovered a mass grave from the 1800s. The grave includes the remains of nearly nearly five dozen 19th-century Irish immigrants who died of cholera (an intestinal infection caused by contaminated water or food) or who perhaps were murdered due to their illness and ethnicity. Heavy going! The committed researchers hope to identify the remains and send them back to Ireland. One head researcher noted, “This was someone’s son or brother or husband… Something has to be done.” To read more about this project, click here. Source
